Gjirokastër Obelisk Gjirokaster

DETAILS

  • the obelisk (Point)

The obelisk, otherwise known as "Mëmëdheu ABC", was worked on for two years by a group of talented and well-known Albanian sculptors such as Mumtaz Dhrami, Stefan Papamihali and Xenofon Kostaqi. It is 7 meters high and it’s built with over 100 stone blocks taken from the Progonat of Kurveleshi. The stones are rare and extremely resistant to natural atmospheric factors. The monument was inaugurated in March 1978, in honor of the Albanian pioneers of education.

  • First school "liria"... ... (Point)

“Liria” school was opened in September of 1908, after the constant efforts of the Gjirokastra teachers. During the Ottoman break it was forbidden to learn Albanian language, and with all the slow decline of the Ottoman Empire, the opening of this school showed challenge and courage; reflected the growing sense of Albanian national identity. The "Liria" school was built on the highest peak of two hills in the prefecture, from where you can enjoy a stunning view of the city, especially of the historical neighborhoods of Varoshit, Palortos (hills on the right) and Dunavat (hills on the left).
