Pazari i Korçës Korçë

DETAILS

  • The old bazaar (Area)

The Old Bazaar of Korça enjoys early historical, cultural and architectural values. It is undoubtedly among the most favourite attractions of local and foreign tourists in Korça. The bazaar is characterized by generally one- and two-story buildings and narrow alleys. The beginnings are not clear as only a few circumstantial records have survived. But what is known for sure is that the Old Bazaar of Korça reached the peak of development during the second half of the century XIX and at the beginning of the century XX. Precisely in the period when it was rebuilt according to advanced urban and architectural criteria. The Bazaar of Korça has been damaged and burned three times, but none of these times stopped its brilliance. Based on old photos and documentation, today we see only a part of the reconstructed bazaar.

  • The main architectur... ... (Area)

The average height of bazaar buildings is about 8 m. Almost every store has two floors, a basement, long and narrow windows, as well as stairs that enable the connection between the floors. The function of the second floor used to vary depending on the type of store. It could be used for warehouse or workshop. In the past, the bazaar had not only a high number of shops (about 1 thousand shops), but had also a high number of bakeries, guesthouses, jewellers, watchmakers, etc. The number of guesthouses was somewhere around 16. Today, only 6 of them are still standing (they are called Hani i Elbasanit, i Manastirit, i Gjelit, i Oparakë ve, Kiços and Hani me Dy Porta). During the reconstruction of the bazaar, protection from frequent fires and earthquakes was also taken into account; durable materials such as carved stone or bricks were widely used. The lower floors are mainly built with stone, there are rare cases when an entire space is built with stone. The use of metal shutters and shutters on doors, windows and showcases, in addition to protecting the store, was also a measure taken against a possible fire. In the restaurants, we find the technique with shutters applied for a long time, especially in their front views.

  • Geographical area (Area)

The bazaar layed to the south-west of Korça, on both sides of the Morava River, and expanded more to its left. These two sides of the bazaar were connected by wooden bridges, while the main road from the city crossed the river on a stone arched bridge, above which stood shops, workshops and guesthouses. The bazaar itself was divided into two parts, the main part and the part outside it. The main part was distinguished by the compositional center, which was created by a square around which buildings such as blocks and workshops were erected. And this very compact center was surrounded by a semi-circular ring of successively built inns. As it can be understood, there was a functional separation between the manufacturing and commercial units.
