Welcome to Fortress San Giovanni, ancient fortification that overlooks Finalborgo, village belonging to the Municipality of Finale Ligure and member of the Italian Nicest Villages' Club (Borghi più Belli d'Italia). The building was built by the Spaniards in the middle of the 1600s and later expanded. Entrusted by the Superintendency For The Environmental And Architectural Heritage Of Liguria to Polo Museale of Liguria, it can be visited thanks to the agreement signed with the Municipality of Finale Ligure. Built around a pre-existing tower between 1640 and 1644 according to the design created by the Spanish commander Ferdinando Glazer and placed on the ridge between the valleys of the Pora and Aquila, it was used as garrison to protect the village from the Genoese raids. Later Gaspare Beretta, realized, on the occasion of the passage of the infanta Margaret of Spain in 1666, the famous road along which the fort is located. The new road - also called Via dell'Imperatrice (the Road of the Empress) - connected the Marquisate of Finale to the duchy of Milan and, therefore, to Europe. Fortress San Giovanni was abandoned by the Spanish in 1707 and, under the domination of Genoa in 1713, it was partially destroyed. In 1833 it became a prison. Since 1960 it has been public property and it has recently been completely restored. Inside the Fort there are small cells, a deconsecrated votive chapel, other spaces located on different floors and a large parade ground.
